MT, WordPress, and PHPBB

OK, I have a little dilemma. I love the way I have MT(blog) and Phpbb(boards) set up…, but I dont like MT. MT is hard to work with and I dont know how many times I have messed something up and struggled to get it back up. Its slow with the rebuilding and hard to back up and restore. And I have had to struggle to get every upgrade or addon working. I have had to recode the the site when I wanted to update or just change the look of the site. When I asked for suggestions, David and Mary asked for a system to keep track of posts and comments. I searched around and couldnt find an easy solution and something dawned on me. If I continue this website, I will need to move to a new system.
Reasons why I will need to move:
1) MT came out with a new version about 6 months ago. They are no longer supporting this version, and mod creators are changing their mods over without back support.
2) Maintaining MT and making sure its secure will become harder over the next few months, years.
3) I despise MT, now(and all its little hidden codes).
4) I want a more integrated system.

Unfortunately, there is a slight problem, phpbb. WordPress and Phpbb do not like each other, refuse to negotiate a truce, and have started attacking each other. I am to the point of fogetting the whole integration of the two for the time being. (wordpress developers are getting a lot of requests to allow the integration into existing databases, so there is a good chance later it will work.)

WordPress is nice. I wont go on about how nice it is(oh looks like I did), but I could actually set it up so friends could post new messages creating a community blog. While David, Ronnie, whoever wants, can have a separate section or blog to post their ideas. David and I have been playing with another wonderful plugin a live chat system, which was so freakin easy to install. I can restrict posts to selected users by level per post and privatize a post all together, allow friends to register their names but also allow unregistered users to post, and integrate everything into one package or keep separate and make changes accordingly. New updates The big thing that will make me move over is the support and developers and the easy to interpret code, the system is new but already the plugin support is amazing.

For most of you (friends and collegues), this only means that small things and appearances of the websites will change. For David and Ronnie, a lot of things are going to change, but hopefully for the better. There should be no problem with transfering the old posts into the new system. I should also be able to bring over the comments into the new system, but it may take a little work, hehe. I will also try to import all the users from phpbb into the database, so that everyone will have their own logins.

If you have any concerns or any wishes, please feel free to post them. Ronnie and David, you will need to tell me whether you want a separate system or an integrated system. And we will need to work out the logistics. I will start setting up the system for the transfer.

(Phpbb will remain, though its significance will diminish until I reintegrate them, but then I may not need to.)

WordPress

Goofing around, I found another weblog solution called WordPress.
I have installed it Here.

David and Ron, I have set up logins for you to test using the same password and login for Movable Type. Test it out. Tell me what you think. It has a lot of nice features to it:
User categories and restricted viewing requiring login.
I am seeing if I can integrate it into phpbb. Shouldnt be too hard?
If not and it looks fun I might switch over to it.

Tell me what you think.

Ok, due to popular demand.

Structure Change (slight)
I have moved the listings on the side around. I am still playing with it, but it should satisfy the curious. David and Ron if you would like me to change it or add the recent discussions to your site, please post or message me.

Notification by Email
In the boards, you will find if you are logged in a link near the bottom of the page labeled “Watch this forum for posts”. If you click on the link, the board will automatically email (to the address in your profile) when a new topic or message is posted in that forum. Test it out see what you think.

MT Notification
I tried to integrate a mod for enhancing the notification system. Unfortunately, it required Movable Type 3 or higher. I cant decide to upgrade to MT3. Reasons why I havent upgraded include:
1) Cost –
the free one limits to 1 Author and 3 weblogs
for $69 – it allows 5 authors and Unlimited blogs.
for $99 – it allows unlimited blogs and unlimited authors.
2) Mods –
the integration mod we have all come to love may not work with 3.0
meaning I would have to rewrite it, which would suck.
i dont know if the photo-blog would work either.
3) Upgrade –
I would have to upgrade everything, which means the styles.
I do not think the styles sheets we have can work with the new style.

Oh well, I am still fumbling for a way to have them post immediately upon creation, but it would be easier at the moment for the authors to just view their entries after writing them. Just go to the individual entry as you would if you were reading them and it will make the post in the forums. Oh well, I will probably stop fooling around with everything till next week. I need to focus on something more important.

Tinkering with the website

I have been tinkering with the website to make it more convient for myself, which in turn makes it more convient for people who want the same things as myself. If you will look to the right of the screen, you will see a new Recent Discussion section of the website, which instead of listing previous threads, which seemed to me to be a little redundant, now shows the current topics of discussion. I am in the process of updating the code for the integration and I hope to redo the recent discussion, but it doesnt seem to be working (at least this way works). If you see any problems, or better yet, if there is anything you would like this webpage to do, post a reply to this. I am trying to integrate the restricted posts into the phpbb usergroup categories, so its a little more secure and harder to circuvent. then I can post to my hearts content about “stuff” that might offend the “children”. hehe

Lucas Arrested for Molestation

In an interview with Good Morning America, George Lucas announced a new movie, a prequel to SW ep1. Though restraining orders had been issued to force Lucas to avoid contact with my memories of my youth, he has repeatedly forced himself upon them to fatten his wallet. Now he has threatened to rape my memories head on with a new movie based 100 years before SW Ep 1 with Yoda as lead.
Does he not have enough money? Could I just start sending it to him? $50 a month? Why is he going after Yoda? When will he stop?

Star Wars, NiN, and Depressing Events

Star Wars:

Spoilers. Dont read if you dont want to know. If you havnt seen it yet, go somewhere else.

As I sat there waiting for Star Wars to begin, I laughed at the irony. I was 30 years old sitting in a movie theatre with my Mother. Oh how the circle turns. As the yellow text leaped onto the screen, she whispered in my ear, “Does this make you feel like a kid?” Yes Yes it does. And boy did they spoonfeed me.

Glad I could see how the twins got to their separate homes. I wouldnt have caught that from the previous trilogy. Glad you showed me the Death Star being built, though 20 years is a long fucking time to build a Death Star without anyone noticing. Didnt it only take them a few years to nearly build the second one? Maybe this was only a test run and shortly after it was built, it blew up. Maybe they had design problems and needed to fix them. Maybe that could explain why they still had a major flaw in the final version. I dont care any more.

Like David, I spent the first part of the movie bored. Oh they were fighting with sabers and such, but it was boring. No real concern for them. As I was bored, I started waiting for the change, the moment he would become evil, EVIL. Unfortunately this helped to make it not as great as I had hoped. It was better than I expected, but not as good as I had hoped.
I was disappointed with both Count Dooku and Mace Windu’s death. Both seemed insignificant, though they had become crucial characters (or at least as crucial as a SW character can get).
Only exciting thing was Anakin’s transformation and it really wasnt that exciting. The conversation with Palpatine was great. The rest of the dialogue was SW usual fair. But the worst thing about the movie was nothing was left to the imaginations. Yoda gets hurt, so thats why he moves like an old man. Yoda is going to train Obi-wan to talk to his former Master and learn how to be immortal (Blue glowy), not just a gift for putting up with all the shit the sith and regular people dealt out.
Every mystery built up by our pondering imaginations has been explained in explicit, excrutiating detail. Somehow this has tarnished the movies. I am almost to the point of denying the existence of the new trilogy. To Weatherly: You can only love the original trilogy if you watched it as a kid. You can only enjoy the new trilogy if you are a kid or love the old.

I only enjoyed SW III because I love the old.

I will purchase SW III and watch it one last time when I watch all of them in a row (and I may skip through parts).

NIN:

Regardless of the delay because our waitress couldnt count out change, regardless of arriving as NiN was taking the stage because the directions were not the best, regardless of not being in our seats because others decided we were not coming, the concert was fucking awesome.
It was loud, it was hot, it was crammed just enough with people. Nothing like a full house to up the energy. Trent and gang were great. I lost my voice from screaming. I was soaked in sweat. I felt like I was 19 again. Our “seats” were on top of him. I could have spit and hit him. The music was loud and the bass vibrated my nether regions. I sung every song all the lyrics, except for the quiet ones. I shouted SUCK SUCK SUCK when prompted. It was great.
And again in the tradition of concerts, I missed the opening acts.

If my week would have ended Tuesday night, it would have been a great week.

Damn, I wish it had.

Tuesday morning was one of the worst mornings of my life, but it was worth it.

Wednesday morning, we drove David to the airport. He boarded a plane and flew to New York. He has moved to NY. I have spent nearly all of his 24 years within LOS. He even lived with Amanda and me for a year. He has now grown up, moved out, and is getting on with his life. I am happy for him. But I cried the same.

Good return trip with Melissa and Ron. Though I tried to hide it, I was sad the entire trip back. I laughed and joke with them, but I wished David was riding back. I will miss both, Ron and Melissa. Melissa when she moves away in August and Ron when Amanda and I leave.

Later that night Amanda’s car blew a tire. She was ok, but I had to go be the “savior”. Luckily we had to money to pay for the repairs.
Melissa, David and Ron will be happy that we didnt drive my vehicle up to Houston. Lately, I have been hearing a grating sound coming from the front end. Supposedly its the gear box and one of the front axil bars. Everything is shaking on the front end. I am surprised it hasnt fallen off. Its going to hurt when I get it fixed.

I am tired. I enjoyed the trip, but unfortunately for me it ended too early and with me at my house alone, crying. Ron asked if I wanted to go to see SW again. I couldnt bring myself to go. I was too weak. Luckily, Amanda needed my help, so I couldnt dwell on it.

Sometimes, I think I love people too much for my own good.

I heard on Talk of the Nation today that some doctors are starting to see because of evidence that Depression is a disease related to the deterioration of specific areas of the brain. Kind of like epilepsy. I wonder how much damage I am allowing to be inflicted on me, but sometimes I dont want to worry about it.

I have fallen in love with this man.

“Sometimes I wonder: if the people who make up style sheets and enforce them are so damn fond of arbitrary and indefensible “rules” not grounded in usage, even the usage of the intellectual elites, why don’t they just invent some? Say, your press won’t publish any word with the letter “z” in it, or any sentence that begins with a vowel letter, or any occurrence of the pseudocleft construction, or the sequence “is for” (no matter how it arises)? I can think of hundreds of entertaining “rules” of this sort. You could hire people to enforce them, and make every book published by your press ENTIRELY CONSISTENT with them. And then schoolchildren everywhere could be drilled on these “rules”. Your press could go down in history.

Hey, John Dryden did it for stranded prepositions. Some still-unidentified person(s) did it for possessive antecedents for pronouns, less than a century ago. There’s plenty of territory still available. Talk it up to your board.”
