Why cant Political quzzes be unbiased and specific in their questions?

It seems to me that making a political quiz that was unbiased, yet specific would be easy to do. I must be wrong because every quiz I have seen asks questions in a way to elicit a specific response by using vague and contradictory questions. Strangely enough, David posted a quiz on his webpage and everyone has been filling it out. Since David has not criticized the questions for being vague, I thought it was time for me to.

Most of the questions ask incorrectly “Do you believe”. Well I do believe most of these exist or the ideas exist. This is not what it is trying to ask. The author would like me to say I accept these ideas or understand these ideas to be better than ideas. Unfortunately, the misuse of believe is not the only problem with the questions. They are also extremely vague.
Do you believe in the idea of, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”? – The only semi valid use of believe.
Do you believe in totalitarianism? – Yes I believe totalitarianism is a political category.
Do you believe in collective or cooperative ownership of property? – Yes, I believe that collective and cooperative ownership of property has been attempting and in some cases succeeded.
Do you believe in a classless society? — No I do not believe there has been a classless society and I do not believe one could exist.
Do you believe the ideals of Benito Mussolini? — I believe Benito Mussolini had ideals.
Do you believe in a voluntary cooperation of free individuals? — Oh look at the rhetoric. This is something which is usually said before signing up for a communist or anarchist rally.
Do you believe in violently overthrowing capitalism? — see pacifist
Do you believe violence is an appropriate way to gain power? — see pacifist
Do you believe in the use of propaganda? – Yes I believe propaganda is used.
Are you an ecologist? – No I am not “a biologist who studies the relation between organisms and their environment”
Are you more conservative than most? — I have no freaking Idea but if the climate of the last election was any sign, no.
Are you more liberal than most? — hmm see above but reversed.
Should the people control the government? – You mean we dont?
Are you racist? — Hell Yes Im a fucking racist.
Is the Aryan race a master race? — Yes because Im a racist, though I dont think I am Aryan.
Do you oppose nuclear testing? — Um No.
True or False: I think gays should not be able to marry. — Ok
Do you like the thought of total freedom? — Love the thought of total freedom, think it is impossible but love the thought.
Do you dislike the idea of a “Big Brother” type figure? — Um yeah “Big Brother” was the villian in “1984”.
Are you pacifist? — I love the fact that not only was I asked if I was a pacifist, but also I was asked if I believed in the violent overthrow of capatilism and violence is the answer.
Do you support the war in Iraq? — No I dont Im a pacifist.
Do you support public education? — Yes I pay taxes.

The next two are decent questions.
Are you opposed to capitalism?
Do you support stricter gun control?
Though why not ask, do you oppose socialism? or do I think that the right to bear arms is all inclusive?

hehe

Is there anything they cant do correctly?

Google Maps

Expedia and Mapquest are in trouble.
Numerous years to get it right and they never did. It took a company with no direct, monetary advantage do it correctly.
Dont know the specific address put what you know. Just want to know distance between two cities just put the city name and state name.
Want a city map, easy to do.
Search for nearest drug stores. Google presents a map of the locations with ballons for each place click on the one you want and a little box opens to get directions from.

Its easy and correct. Like all of the other searchs that I have grown to depend on, I will never go back to Expedia and Mapquest.

We have gone beyond any sense of rational thought.

“Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Mike Enzi sent a letter to Schiavo and husband Michael, her legal guardian, asking them to appear at a March 28 hearing to “review health-care policies and practices.”

Federal criminal law protects witnesses who have been called to appear before Congressional committees from anyone “who may obstruct or impede” their testimony, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican, said in a statement posted on his Web site.”

I dont believe in God . . . So I cannot be saved!!

Man do I have a fucking headache. I hate teaching class with a headache.

Clai says “You know you dont have to do the thesis. You could take a class or two and finish up. I would vouch for any class you wanted even outside of the department.”

Intriguing. But I feel as though I would be giving up and failing.

I listen to my fellow inmates, Shai and Girlbean, complain about teaching students and I wonder whats wrong with me. Why do I enjoy teaching? Even with a headache. I actually had fun today teaching

Damn I had a decent week.

The paper for the L&L journal has been sent.

My students actually did their work and are trying to learn. I had some fun.

David and I secured tickets to NiN in May(Melissa and Ronnie ar going also), which is lucky because its now sold out.

David fixed his computer by replacing the power supply, and Antec might actually refund the cost of the first power supply. They should pay for damaging the video card and cd burner also, but they dont seem to agree.

Amanda still loves me and wants my body.

All I need to do is get some sleep. Make Amanda happy. and finish my Thesis. Not impossible, hehe.

Crisis of Faith?

So what prompted all of this discussion with Clai and then prompted the posting of the argument? A small quote written on a white dry erase board of a professor with a room on the same hall as Clai: “Masculinity and Femininity, gifts from God, when properly excercised*, unto each other, receive the greatest blessings.” *Not quite positive on correct word.

I stated to Clai how the use of “proper” along with “God”, “unto each other”, and “blessings” was mildly offensive and others would probably take offense to it. This began a long discussion about beliefs, and let me be quite frank. I have been working intensely on a paper for the last month and have had very little sleep. It has also been a long time since I have had to argue with an intelligent person about my beliefs. To top if off, Clai has a tendency to counter your arguments just to counter them. So for an hour, I tried to hold my own with my beliefs. After sidetracking from the main discussion of whether my argument was valid, Clai’s main focus became if believing in God did not change anything what advantage would I have by not believing in God. I ended the argument by stating that I would be changing my belief in God, and thats a change I am not prepared to make. This along with Ronnie’s blatant attacks on my post (Damn Him, hehe). Has started me down a road, I thought I had already visited. (Let me warn you I still have not gotten the sleep required to question one’s personal beliefs.)

Why am I an atheist?

Throughout my life, I have had various spiritual encounters which could for the normal sane person verify their belief in a supreme being, but for me, it proved how easily swayed we are to emotional events. During a C.A.P. boot(lite) camp after being demeaned, belittled and bullied, I went to a Methodist service, and for the first time in my life, I felt sanctuary. I decided from that moment on to follow a spiritual path and counseled with spiritual leaders on the base. For months, I had a purpose and goal for my life. The ultimate reason why I wanted to be a pastor was the sanctuary. Also, the idea of being a spiritual leader and guiding and enlightening people intrigued me. Unfortunately, one major sticking point kept me from following that path: I do not believe in a god. Though I tried, I could not convince myself to believe. My conscious would not allow me to pursue a vocation that meant I would have to deceive people on a daily basis. (One of the main reasons I have never been able to pursue sales.)

Years later, I started to attend USL. I thought I wanted to be a psychologist and had prospects of helping people. As I took each class, I noticed a pattern. The students passing the psych classes were not people interested in helping anyone other than themselves, either by self diagnosis or monetary satisfaction. (Let me state this is not the overarching diagnosis of the psychology students pursuing the degree, just an rash observation.) I was having a discussion with a friend, Bob, and we stumbled onto the subject of spirituality. I stated proudly that I was an agnostic and he questioned my reasons. Bob can be abrupt and rude at times, and he finally ended the discussion with something such as “Why don’t you get off the fence?” I doubt he meant the statement to have the influence it did, but it did. I spent the next few years trying to get off the fence. I dont believe I came up with the best choice, but it was my choice. I could not convince myself that there was a supreme being.

Why don’t I believe in a god?
1) I strive to be logical and simplistic. This is hard with so little of the universe being understood, but I cannot accept beliefs that go against logic.
2) I want to accept my deficiencies and strive to fix them. To many times, I have seen people use their god as a crutch patiently waiting for god to direct them and fix them. I cannot accept that. I believe the only control gods can have over human life is the control that is given to them.
3) I believe man created the idea of god and religions for their own purposes, whatever the purposes may be.
4) I believe each individual is ultimately responsible for themselves. Actions which do not have a direct negative affect on the living should not be judge by the living: abortion, suicide, sodomy, gluttony, sloth, homosexuality . . .
5) I believe no living person should be treated differently because of their beliefs.
6) I despise organized religions for using their power and control to manipulate situations to benefit the religion. I used to believe that the Buddhist were the answer, that a religion without a godhead was the way, until I saw one group of Buddhists attacking another due to the refusal for the latter group to abandon a holy site. Religion fails when man is concerned, especially when gatherings of men become involved.
7) I believe people need spirituality but I do not believe spirituality needs a godhead.
8) I believe spirituality is personal and changes from person to person.
9) I lack faith in the unknowable. I cannot accept something that I cannot prove and is unprovable. Clai argued that I have faith that events that happened before will happen again. Well, I can agree that I have faith that events which I have witnessed on a regular basis will happen again, but I have never witnessed a god.
10) I have never had the overwhelming spiritual moment which could not be understood with logic. I have not had the moment of clarity where I will be forced to accept the believe in a god because no rational logic can explain it.

I am not so cold and hard to believe that my believes will never change. I also do not look down upon individuals who believe in a god for themselves and themselves only and do not work to convert others. I avoid discussing religion and spirituality because I do not want to influence someone into not believing. I have only told individuals who I believe would accept my belief and allow me to believe it. Unfortunately, this has usually been proven wrong. I have found that people cannot accept the fact that I believe differently then them. I have only successfully forced the subject to be closed, which is depressing because I used to enjoy discussing believes with others.

I am tired of defending myself. I do not believe I should have to defend my beliefs on spirituality. In fact, I find arguing about spirituality is an endless conflict. It will never have a solution because neither side will abandon their beliefs.

I am an atheist by choice.

Creationist vs Evolutionists

Clai gave the best creationist theory I have heard, which is saying a lot since I have been inundated with these theories. The reason it is so good is that it makes the question moot.

Analogy:
You are a wine connieseur during Jesus’ life, and you just so happen to witness the miracle of him turning the water into wine. You having a great knowledge of wine and able to determine the specific age, quality and region of any wine would be able to determine the qualities of the Jesus’ wine. In fact, the wine would have to have these qualities if it was to be considered wine. It would not be outside of the powers of a miracle for the wine to have these qualities. Within the instant of the miracle, the water in its transformation to wine gains all the qualities that wine needs to be wine: age, grape, region.

For the world to be a world, it needs to have all the qualities inherent with a world. These qualities would include a history. The reason it needs this history is based on the physical laws which preside over the world. As God creates the world, he creates the history the world needs to be a world.

If this is true, then the question becomes how does this really affect anything? If God created the universe (world) with everything intact because to be the universe it needed all the qualities of the universe, then how would when it happen actually affect us? 100,000,000,000 years ago, 5000 years ago. Its still the same outcome. The laws of physics are still the same. The fossil are still the same. The story of evolution is still the same. It has to have all these qualities to be a universe.

There you go end of argument. It does not lessen the pursuit of the history because if God did create everything then you are still learning something.
Knowing more about the universe would be equal to learning more about God.

Its a brilliant argument because it dismisses the argument.

Beating Head Against Wall

Why is it every time you look at a paper you are working on you find more shit which is wrong? Why do I always end up writing into the middle of the night?

Running the Blend is becoming my nightmare project. If I get this in, and they publish it. I am going to be so fucking relieved and surprised I may just end it there. but again I would lose out on the refrigerator.
