I found an interesting book due to my brother’s insistance that cognitive science has something to tell us. Apparently numbers are a mechanism in the brain. Go figure eh? nothing like a controversey sparker to begin a blog post.

I’m being sarcastic because i don’t think thats ever been in question. In fact, I think Kant should get the credit for inspiring this belief, because he claimed that space and time were mechanism of perception and how the human mind worked. If it weren’t for space and time, numbers wouldn’t exist.

All the same the book is not bad. It takes pot shots at the platonic view of the world, but hey who doesn’t take pot shots at platonic views every once in a while? (I’m defining pot shots as arguments against well known failures of platonic theory, like if the forms exist where are they and how do they interact with the physical world. This has been a flaw for platonic belief for many many years.) I will have more of an opinion when i finish reading it.

So just curious if people agree with this…

Does being selective about information infer argument?
What if the person selecting the information has no intended purpose for the information, i.e. motive?
Take the media, would you go so far as to say that the media producing a news broadcast about violent behavior in the inner city and ignoring the local art museum’s opening of a wing devoted to paintings about bambi was an actual argument?
Can you turn actions into arguments?
If you woke up this morning and put your feet into a pair of shoes, is it acceptable to say there was an argument for such an action?
Are we responsible for the arguments people interpret from our work?
If we make actions into arguments, can we hold the person performing the actions responsible for the argument we derive?

Sonic:
“Yeah I knew I had a problem when I had a ring in each hand, snorting crushed rings off the ass of a twelve-year old boy I called “ring”. ”

Now where did i read that quote from.

i’ve been doing some thinking.

I have been struggling the last few months over what i will do when i graduate. I want to celebrate it in some way shape or form and i think i have figured something out.

I want to go on a trip. I’ve wanted to do something in some way shape or form as a graduation present to myself but i thought with the current piling of bills that it would be largely impossible. Of course i began figuring some things out financially and i’ve been largely over-reacting to my financial situation. If i work every free weekend i have from now till i graduate, i can actually go on a trip somewhere within the united states. I think i could even fund it myself, assuming i choose some cheap lodging in the place or places i go.

This is still largely up in the air. It would of course mean not working the full time after i graduate. Between the 15th and may 24th i have 9 days open. if i work three or four of those days that leaves me some time to travel somewhere. I don’t know i guess i’m delerious.

You might ask where this is all coming from. I got into a discussion with Mary and it dawned on me that as much as i used to say i wanted this, i never really calculated the probability of a trip happening. I just assumed it impossible. What is more, before now i was calculating the cost of a new computer into my financial woes.

I’m just thinking… heh

Future…

It is set.. i’m officially moving up to NYC May 25th… the day after the NIN Concert. Hopefully they will announce a New York concert and i can invite Trey up and perhaps Mary will want to accompany me. I’m also interested in seeing Tori Amos in Concert. I hear she is walking around on a sensualiti tour… Mary hates that name…

i’m kind of tired.. didn’t get to sleep early last night… i hung up with Mary and after an hour of tossing and turning i surfed the web and overall dreaded coming to work this morning.

To be honest what was the first problem is it had difficulty turning on. After a month of working with my computer, when the actual computer would run it would give me this bios error out of the speakers. It was this young womans voice alerting me that there was “A CPU error”. I replaced the motherboard and using all my old parts the cpu still kept failing and finally i just surrendered and kept my computer running.

After a month or two the computer’s inability to start up after being turned off, i got concerned. The major problem is the first two or three attempts at restarting the computer made it to where it wouldn’t actually load windows. I sounded as though the video card was disengaging. We now realize it was because of a lack of power to run the video card.

After my computer failed to start several different times the video card began to not put out an image to my monitor. I decided my video card must be going out. I replaced my video card and IT still had problems restarting. This time it was not engaging the hard drives.

AFter the last month of keeping my computer logged in and running, my computer was turned off and it was the last step the power supply would take.

AFter being turned off i spent several times restarting it and the way the cycle worked this time is that
At first it would log into windows for five minutes and then the video would cut out.
I would restart my computer and no video would display after the bios login screen.
After a sequence of several restarts the computer would stop having an image for even the bios screen.

During this whole performance Trey was working in the background diagnosing everything. In fact right after i switched out the video card he downloaded a voltage monitor and noticed that there wasn’t enough power being sent to the processor. It was his conclusion that my power supply was failining.

This is of course when i argued with him tooth and nail. I had never heard of a power supply “going” out. I’ve heard of them breaking and i’ve heard of them working. NEver had i heard them slowly fail to produce the power necessary. In the end i just decided to take it to Best Buy and see if they could run a diagnostic on my power supply. I wanted to disprove the power supply diagnosis for the cheapest possible to be completly honest.

Anyways, it turned out that the power supply was actually failing. I was wrong. Trey was right. I’m sure i’ll never live it down. On the positive side this is the sweetest argument i’ve ever lost because i’m enjoying my computer completly.

wiped out…

I’m freaking wiped out. I have a couple weeks worth of hell coming up. It isn’t bad hell, it is just tedious hell.

I’m working for the next two weekends in a row including this weekend.

The good news is my computer is fixed. It happened to be the power supply as previously diagnosed by none other then my brother. If i would have followed my understanding i’d have replaced every part except that. *rolls his eyes*

Want to know something interesting? I purchased the computer in november of 2003.. and it has never run correctly. I’ve been replacing part after part and only now does it actually run like a freaking champ. Insane.

It is strange how happy fixing my computer has made me. I’m almost giddy.

I am also pleased i got a ticket to see NiN. Everything fell apart with the NYC showing and they sold out to quickly.

Oh well that will be nice…

This lawyer is bad. I mean literally bad. I want to talk about this interview between CBS news and Jack Thompson, the current lawyer attempting to say that violence in video games leads to violence in society.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/24/tech/gamecore/main676446.shtml

Every philosopher reading this interview is going to love this little tidbit exherted out for your convienience:

Quote:
Does age or sex play a factor in violent, aggressive behavior?

Sure, the sex and violence centers of the brain overlay one another, which is why the increasing mix of sex and violence is troubling. Armies have been known to go on rape rampages after battles because the violence stimulates sexual aggression. How lovely that GTA weds sex and violence in the same game. We are training a generation of teens to combine sex with violence, just what America needs.

Ok i will start here. First off technically speaking i think the fallacy he commits is amphiboly. Jack is reacting to one interpretation of the word “Sex”. See he thinks the reporter is talking about the act of sex, when in actuallity the reporter is talking about the adjective use of the word “sex”. It is all very ammusing to me to be honest. He goes on this rant that is completly unrelated to the question at hand. :

Quote:
Is there a correlation between playing violent video games and acting in a violent manner?

Of course. Every parent who is paying attention knows that it is garbage in, garbage out with kids.

The heads of six major health care organizations testified before Congress that there are “hundreds” of studies that prove the link. All the video game industry has are studies paid for by them, which are geared to find the opposite result. Lawyers call such experts “whores.”

Does he even understand what a correlation is? Not to mention fallacies abound here lets keep a listing of them:
1) First there is an appeal to authority, the authority first used is the parents.
2) There is an attempt at poisoning the well for any kind of response against his argument. The statement “Every parent who is paying attention knows that it is garbage in, garbage out with kids. ” Is setup to perform two tasks, the first is to tell you as the reader that if you are a parent and recognize his underlining conclusion then you are in effect a parent who pays attention. Second if you don’t recognize this and happen to be a parent you must not pay enough attention to your children. Shame Shame Jack. His mini-argument can also be shown to demonstrate false dichotomy traits.
He is saying that for all things that x, If x is a parent and x is someone who pays attention to a child then x knows proposition p. (Proposition p is simply shorthand for the phrase “it is garbage in, garbage out with kids.”)
3) Next he suggests that the heads of health care organizations have access to “hundreds” (source unknown) of studies that the gaming corporations do not in fact have access to. My first question is what kind of appeal to authority goes to the heads of health care organizations, and are there in fact any other kinds of motives behind the heads of health care organization’s testimonies? Wouldn’t it be concievable that if the HoHCO could prove in fact that these individuals don’t suffer from mental instability but programming outside of the HoHCO’s control that the HoHCO could in effect not have to cover damages accrued by such actions?
4) Then of course he calls the scientists performing the studies for the Game Corporation’s “Whores”. adhominem of course. Couldn’t it be the case that such an attack be used against the experts for HoHCO?

I had to come back and put this:
:

Quote:
Is gaming escapism?

Yes, just as Ted Bundy escaped into pornography. It is not a release of aggression. It is training for aggression.

COME on this is great. How many doctor’s have testified that Sex and Masturbation are actually great stress relievers? What is more is how many studies have proven that aggression is usually caused by intense stress in their daily lifestyle?

I’m just positing a potential counter claim. Wouldn’t pornography lead to less aggressive behaviour? OH wait that is of course assuming our society didn’t have such a stigma attatched to pornography which causes you to feel guilty about expressing yourself sexually. SO in the end it must be the pornography industry that is the root of all our evil right?…… right? Let me hear an AMEN!

I need to stop this fun.. i might continue analyzing the interview.. it is horrible from first glance… oh well
