   Funny how really dry business talk can be interesting if it relates to a subject you care about. In Doc Connor’s class yesterday we talked about the philosophy of caring (and how it relates to justice, of course!) One of the interesting things about caring is that it prevents certain actions from becoming boring. For instance, if a pet you are fond of rubs up on you every day, you don’t mind, even though it’s the same thing every day. Caring changes the notion of justice by accounting for our personal differences. Historically our system is based on egalitarianism. This comes from Hobbes and Locke. (Life is a war of all against all, and anyone is capable of killing anyone else, so we are all equal.) The philosophy of caring says this is not true at all – infants, for instance, are not capable of fending for themselves. They need care. This is developed into a model where we are all surrounded by concentric circles of caring, where we care the most for those in our inner circle, and less and less for this in the other circles as they radiate outward. Looks like I just completely changed the subject. Sorry! 😳
